Blogging About Ceramic Decals

***See bottom of this post on how to win one of my pendants***

I was thrilled to be asked by Mary Harding via the Beads-of-Clay Blog about the process I use to create my Porcelain Decal pieces.

There are two other Beads of Clay artists that also contributed to the blog post through Mary, so check it out for all the details.

I wanted to post some additional pictures about the actual process here to give you a visual insight into how I make the pieces (to compliment what the BOC blog has on it)...

The following picture is of my normal work space when applying the decals to my already glazed (to Cone 6) pieces. Decals are cut out, pieces are laid out, and extras are on stand by in baggies. I dry fit the decals before putting them into the water bath. The towel on the table is there because I like to be able to get a little messy when working and not worry about dripping all over the place...

This picture is a close up of the warm water bath that the cut out decal pieces sit in to remove the paper backing and moisten the "glue" on actual decal. You can see one of the paper backings towards the top right of the picture.

Here are some of my Chickadee and Dark Eyed Junco, and a few abstract designs once they are in their final place. Notice how dark the image is before the Decal Firing (Cone 1).

And here is a bunch of my flower pieces. I liked having the images a bit smaller and off center so charms and other dangles can be hung from the hole without covering the image entirely.

A close up of some of my flower drawings as decals before they are fired in the kiln...

Here is a quick shot of the pieces in the kiln before the Cone 1 firing...

And after the firing... Notice the color change?

Here are some pieces out of one of my very first decal firings. And like anything, you keep testing to see how to make the pieces come out as you visualize. For me it was figuring out to put a very thin coat of glaze (not my normal 2-4 coats of glaze as pictured here) and firing to Cone 1 for the decals...

If you want to give this a try, you will have to be ready to run tests to see what will work best for you (well, really, what works best for the materials you are using).

For blank beads, check out my friend Marla's company:
Early in the year when I realized that I wanted to work more on the layout of the design on the piece rather than on the actual making of the plain porcelain pendants, I asked Marla if she could have my entire line (and then some) of my standard shapes and sizes made for me - and for her to be able to sell through her company (why reinvent the wheel right? and why not help support another artist and small business - especially when the quality of the pieces are out of this world!!!)

So that's what we're working on... well, I sent the sizes and shapes and she's working on it, I'm buying them...

And you can benefit by being able to just click and buy the same pieces that I use by going to her website and shopping. And she offers various clay bodies with different firing temperatures. Amazing!!! Lots more to come as the pieces are finalized...

Oh and check out the Bisque Bead Supply Blog as well. She's got news and contests on there!

For other suppliers, check out the Beads of Clay Blog link (for info and for where to get the laser-jet water slide decal paper)

And for those of you who have gotten to the bottom of this blog - a contest (2 actually)...
If you comment on this blog, you will be entered to win this:
My daisy flower on my large round porcelain pendant - on a black silky ribbon.

If you have a blog or website and post a link to this blog, then comment here with a link, I'll put you in a 2nd drawing to win the above pendant and some additional surprise goodies.

Chloe will be pulling the winners (from a box or hat of sorts) on Friday, August 7th.

Have fun!!!

A Personal Final Bead Show and Other Little Steps...

It hit me yesterday that it's so weird that Bead Fest Philly (this August) is the last bead show that I have personally signed on to do.

It is weird, but it is such a relief...
And in a way - funny too because Bead Fest - in it's 2nd year was my very first Bead Show ever...

Darlene is still running the bead show gamut with my pieces and a ton of other artist pieces...
And I will continue to list the shows on my website and blog...

I am just going to be spending time in what will hopefully be a more creative place...
And a more family centered home environment while Chloe and expectant baby #2 are still little...

I'm excited - actually feeling energized - about all of these small steps I keep taking to get my life back to it's new "normal" place.
I feel like I'm reaching a place in my life where I can almost look over the edge and see all the opportunity that is in front of me...

Little by little is the key in my life right now...
Such a practice in patience (very difficult for this Taurus!)...

I feel I'm on the cusp of something new with my work...
Small scale for sure...
Textural for sure...
Maybe a bit more sculptural and organic if I can loosen up a bit...

I've been making some new stuff for Bead Fest in Philly and can't wait to see how they look glazed...

So if you are going to the show, make sure to stop by and see me and Darlene to say Hi.

I still have a drawing in mind, and will pull that together and let you know the details once I figure out the details...

Hope you're having a creative day!

Trunk Shows and Bead Shows...

It seems crazy around here some days...
Beads going out to shops for trunk shows...
Beads coming back from trunk shows...

Beads going out for orders...
Beads going out for show stock...

Time to make new stuff...
Um - gotta find the time to make new stuff...

I'm pretty excited that Bead Fest Philadelphia is almost here!
It is one of those shows that I give myself a deadline of "must have new stuff for this show".

I'm thinking of doing some gift certificate drawings for people that go to the show and buy my pendants from my booth...
hmmm...
check back for details on that idea!

So here is a list of my upcoming trunk shows and ones that are going on now:

And the bead shows run by my friend Darlene of D7 Studio:

Make sure to check out these shops and shows for a lot of my new decal pieces and new glaze colors that aren't available online...

Summer Fun and a July Birthday

Today is Dave's Birthday!!!
We woke up super early (not on purpose - Chloe was up about 2 hours early...)

And Dave has to work today in Philly which means he won't be home until late...
So Chloe and I are going to do our best at giving him a 35th to remember...

Right before Chloe went to school, she gave her dad three books for his birthday.
She picked them out herself at the book store:
2 Dr. Seuss books:

Dave and Chloe spend a lot of time reading books together.
He is such an animated reader and she eats it all up (as do I...)!

Dave is such a wonderful dad...
I seriously couldn't have asked for a better father for my children!

Yesterday as soon as we got this water table from Amazon he put it together so as soon as she was home from school, she could play with it.

After about 5 minutes we had her in just a diaper because her clothes were soaked and she was having a blast. At least we were smart enough to take her shoes & socks off before... we know now naked or bathing suit...

We also discovered that she is quite the ant hunter - big, little, she's got little fear...
With a mom that studied Entomology and loves Pixar's Bug's Life... No wonder...
And one of her favorite songs is the "Baby Bumble Bee" song, with "ouch" being her favorite part...

This is Chloe with her friend Sequoia hanging out at Milburn Orchards a few weeks ago.
Note to mommy when dressing Chloe for stuff like this - Goats like little pink overalls with white daisy flowers on them - they think they are real and try to eat them while your child looks at you with total alarm and not quite sure how to get away...

This structure is in the yard with the goats.
They climb all over it - and look like they have a blast!

The person that designed this really awesome (for design and just the simple fact that the goats enjoy this and aren't just in a pen cooped up all day)...

There is even a pully-conveyer belt thing with a metal cups (possibly an old small rectangular bell) that you can put goat feed into and dump for them up high. Some of the goats have figured out that after you put the food in, if they pull on the conveyer belt thing, they can get the food there before you have a chance to wheel it up for them... Crazy smart animals!!!

Got lots of other pics too of some of our summer adventures... just not the time to post too many...

Hope you are finding the time to have some summer adventures too!

PA Guild of Craftsmen show in Wilmington

One of my favorite Craft Shows:
The PA Guild of Craftsmen
will be here in Wilmington, DE in just a couple of weekends!
July 25 & 26, 2009

I can't tell you how much stuff I've bought from artists at this show...
Not to mention how much stuff has sneaked it's way into this house from this show over the years...

I have a group of friends that usually try to get together for lunch and some crafty shopping during this weekend, and I'm hoping that it comes together again this year.

This year there is a contest for giving away some free admission tickets & a $65 gift certificate! And I'm hoping that I can get my hands on either!

If you are going to go or would want to go, check out the blog for details on winning!

Wish me luck!!!

All In One Place - Almost

I've had a Eureka moment...

It seems like one of those fleeting thoughts over the years has finally knocked hard enough to penetrate my often thick skull...

Here is the background:
4 years ago:
Move into larger house because business is really growing & taking over the townhouse.
And we are planning on starting a family at some point anyway... so why not?

3 years ago:
Production really going, have 3-5 fellow artists helping me out with making pendants.
Main clay studio located in basement, glazing area & office in extra bedroom upstairs.

2 years ago:
Major production slows down, plenty of stock built up.
Stop doing as many shows myself.
Mom gets diagnosed with Leukemia in Jan, passes in Sept.
Pregnant with Chloe late March, born in Dec.

1 year ago:
Spend most of my time figuring out this mom thing...
Decided to put Chloe into school around Sept because she seemed to be getting bored with me after a few hours, and I was getting frustrated because I had no time to get anything done with the studio or business.
Needless to say, she LOVES school and goes 5 days a week now...
I would feel guilty for not having her go to school to socialize and experience all that she is right now...

Present Time:
My Eureka Moment... Get it all into ONE PLACE!

Simplify things...
Organize things...
Everything has it's place - it is time to help find that place and get it there...
And I mean NOW!!!

Here is my bisque stock that is now in one place - one set of shelves in the basement studio:
(THANK YOU DAVE!!! My late night elf that moved this all to the basement for me when I fell asleep last night... What a great husband!!!)
This bisque stock had been in the following places at any given time
(no wonder why I was wasting brain power trying to think about where stuff was!):
1. Glaze room (in bathroom: waiting for rinsing, in bathroom: being dried, on shelf, on floor, on table, in bin, in small to be glazed cup, in baggie, and many more places...).
2. Main House (which room? sorted or not sorted yet? still in bin or in baggies?)
3. Basement (in kiln, in bin, on table, in baggie)

Now it is all in one place. I get the pieces out of the kiln and can put them into their bin.
No more lugging stuff upstairs into the house to get lost in the "to-do dimension".

This next picture is all of my glazes on a new set of shelves that I picked up from Lowes a few weeks ago, and finally got to putting up.

It took me 2 days of many trips down 2 flights of stairs to move all those pints of glaze into the basement studio.
It feels good though - all in one place!

I really wanted to paint the walls and possibly floor before doing this move.
But when I was at Lowes looking at all the paint colors, nothing moved me.
I was about 9 weeks pregnant though - and was having major issues with morning sickness (the all day kind) and being SO tired all the time.

I was overwhelmed by the colors, unsure of what I wanted to be surrounded by every day to feel energized and not irked by the color scheme. Painting to me is such an expression of emotion, I did not want to paint just to paint because I know I'd want to change it when I was feeling better...

So I will hopefully find inspiration sometime next summer when baby #2 is about 6 months old and is joining his/her sister Chloe in school...

So I've got a bunch of other stuff to move into the basement studio, but it takes time. And I told Dave I would take it easy today because I shouldn't be doing heavy lifting being pregnant and all. So I am finally able to catch up on some of my blogs...

Hope all is well!
I'm feeling a bit more energized and more like myself these days - let's hope it lasts!
